Inclusive Healthcare.

Education and awareness are instrumental in developing a culture of inclusion. To deliver greater equity of care, our healthcare practitioners must be equipped with the proper skill-sets, tools, and knowledge base. As Manager of the Division of Diversity & Inclusion, part of my role entails creating and facilitating learning opportunities to advance cultural competency. In this interactive training, I discuss best practices for providing gender affirming care through the use of data, patient stories, case studies, instructional videos, and role-play scenarios.

STORY

To begin, I share my own positionality as an Ally of the LGBTQ+ community and acknowledge the identities I bring to the training, as well as the privileges I am afforded. I then share stories of Trans patients who have felt marginalized and discriminated against in the healthcare system to provide participants with the ‘why’ of this training.

SCIENCE

In the second section of the training I share data on the healthcare experiences of members of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as case study videos from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) on how to provide gender affirming care.

STRATEGY

I end the training with a host of activities participants can engage in to practice the strategies they’ve learned. Participants leave with a greater understanding of the LGBTQ+ patient experience, specific and measurable goals, as well as tangible action items.
